The Practice of the Presence of God-THIRTEENTH LETTER

THIRTEENTH LETTER

To the Same.

It pains me to see you suffer for so long. What gives me some ease and sweetens my feelings about your grief is that they are evidence of GOD’s love for you. When you view them from that perspective, they will be easier to bear. I think you should give up on human remedies and commit yourself fully to GOD’s providence: perhaps He is waiting only for a complete trust in Him and a sincere resignation to cure you. Because your physical treatment has remained ineffective, and because your illness has continued to worsen, it is not tempting for God to leave you in His hands, expecting all from Him.

As I mentioned in my last letter, there are times when He can use diseases of the body to heal the soul’s troubles. Take courage, then. Do not ask God for deliverance from your pains, but for strength to bear it resolutely, for He loves you, as long as He pleases.

Such prayers are difficult to nature, but most acceptable to GOD, and sweet to those who love Him. When one loves GOD, one suffers for His sake with joy and courage. I beseech you to comfort yourself with Him, the one Physician who can heal all our ills. He is the FATHER of the afflicted and is always ready to help us. He loves us more than we can imagine. Thus, love Him and seek no comfort elsewhere. Hopefully, you will receive it soon. Goodbye. You can always count on me to strengthen you with my prayers, no matter how poor they may be.
