Since you’d like to know how I came to acquire that habitual sense of GOD’S presence, which our LORD, out of His mercy, has been so gracious as to bless me, I must confess that I’m not easily moved by your importunities and that now I do it only on the condition that you don’t show it to anybody. All the desire I have for your advancement wouldn’t be enough to make me do it if I knew you should let it be seen. Let me give you an example:
Having found in many books different ways to get to God, and different ways to practice the spiritual life, I thought they’d confuse me more than help me find what I was looking for, which is how to become wholly GOD’S. Having given myself wholly to GOD, in order to be freed from my sin, I renounced everything that was not Him. I began to live as if it was only Him and me in the world.
As a poor criminal before Him sometimes, other times, I saw Him as my FATHER, God at my side: I worshiped Him the most that I could, keeping my mind in His holy Presence, and recalling it when it wandered. The pain didn’t stop me from doing this exercise, even when my mind wandered unintentionally. As much as I made this my business at the appointed times of prayer, I made it my business at all times, every hour, every minute; so that even at the height of my business, nothing could interrupt my thought of GOD.
I’ve always done this since I started practicing religion, and although I do it imperfectly, I find it’s hugely beneficial. I know these are due to GOD’s mercy and goodness, because we wouldn’t be able to do anything without Him.
But when we are faithful to keep ourselves in His holy Presence, and set Him always before us, this not only prevents us from offending Him, and doing anything that would displease Him, but it also enables us to gain a holy freedom, and, if I may so say, a familiarity with GOD, with which we ask the graces we need. Finally, we become accustomed to these acts, and the presence of GOD becomes like a second nature to us. Thank Him, if you please, for all that He has done for such a miserable sinner as me. Let everything praise Him. Amen.
I am, in our LORD, yours, &c.
